Whether you are a hand spinner who wants to properly describe and label your yarn, a knitter who inherited unknown yarn, or any other fiber experimenter wanting a more technical understanding of what you’re working with, the Rocket Balance is going to help you on your fiber arts journey.
This device has two tools in one – a yarn balance and a set of inch gauges (aka wraps per inch or WPI gauges). If you are unsure of what either of these are, don’t worry! Our instructions (find them here, also included with every shipment) provide the much-needed details to get you started.
Yarn Balance
The yarn balance is a tool to determine your yarn’s grist, or how many yards of your yarn it would take to weigh one pound. Why would you want to know your yarn’s grist? First of all, along with twist and fiber type, it is a fundamental quality for describing yarn. Also, as we explain in the instructions, it comes in handy for the common question of “how much yarn do I have left on my bobbin?”.
How does it work? In a nutshell, you will find what length of yarn it takes to level the balance, then multiply this length (in inches) by 100 to determine your yarn’s grist. Check out the full color instructions to see the full details.
Our unique design is small enough to stash in any drawer, and even includes its own scale for measuring the length of yarn it takes to balance.
WPI Gauges / Inch Gauges
The Rocket Balance comes with built-in 1/2" and 1" WPI gauges. These gauges are used to measure the diameter of your yarn, or how many wraps it takes to fill a one-inch-wide gap. This is a common measurement that is especially useful for knitters and other fiber artists.
Each Rocket Balance is 3D printed in Texas with PLA, a biodegradable plastic. Be mindful of exposing your piece to heat (including a hot car) as PLA has the tendency to warp when heated.
